On reset/wedging, we cancel all pending replies from the HW and we also want to cancel an outstanding preemption event. Now that we use the CSB stored in the CPU friendly HWSP, we do not need to track interrupts for when the mmio CSB registers are valid and can just check where we read up to last from the cached HWSP. 2018-06-28drm/i915/execlists: Reset CSB write pointer after resetChris Wilson
On HW reset, the HW clears the write pointer (to 0). But since it also writes its first CSB entry to slot 0, we need to reset the write pointer back to the element before (so the first entry we read is 0). 2018-06-28drm/i915/execlists: Unify CSB access pointersChris Wilson
Following the removal of the last workarounds, the only CSB mmio access is for the old vGPU interface. The mmio registers presented by vGPU do not require forcewake and can be treated as ordinary volatile memory, i.e. they behave just like the HWSP access just at a different location. We can reduce the CSB access to a set of read/write/buffer pointers and treat the various paths identically and not worry about forcewake. (Forcewake is nightmare for worstcase latency, and we want to process this all with irqsoff -- no latency allowed!) v2: Comments, comments, comments. Well, 2 bonus comments. 2018-06-18drm/i915: Fix fallout of fake reset along resumeChris Wilson
commit b2209e62a450 ("drm/i915/execlists: Reset the CSB head tracking on reset/sanitization") and commit 1288786b18f7 ("drm/i915: Move GEM sanitize from resume_early to resume") show the conflicting requirements on the code. We must reset the GPU before trashing live state on a fast resume (hibernation debug, or error paths), but we must only reset our state tracking iff the GPU is reset (or power cycled). This is tricky if we are disabling GPU reset to simulate broken hardware; we reset our state tracking but the GPU is left intact and recovers from its stale state. v2: Again without the assertion for forcewake, no longer required since commit b3ee09a4de33 ("drm/i915/ringbuffer: Fix context restore upon reset") as the contexts are reset from the CS ensuring everything is powered up. 2018-06-14drm/i915: Declare the driver wedged if hangcheck makes no progressChris Wilson
Hangcheck is our back up in case the GPU or the driver gets stuck. It detects when the GPU is not making any progress and issues a GPU reset. However, if the driver is failing to make any progress, we can get ourselves into a situation where we continually try resetting the GPU to no avail. Employ a second timeout such that if we continue to see the same seqno (the stalled engine has made no progress at all) over the course of several hangchecks, declare the driver wedged and attempt to start afresh. 2018-06-11drm/i915/ringbuffer: Fix context restore upon resetChris Wilson
The discovery with trying to enable full-ppgtt was that we were completely failing to the load both the mm and context following the reset. Although we were performing mmio to set the PP_DIR (per-process GTT) and CCID (context), these were taking no effect (the assumption was that this would trigger reload of the context and restore the page tables). It was not until we performed the LRI + MI_SET_CONTEXT in a following context switch would anything occur. Since we are then required to reset the context image and PP_DIR using CS commands, we place those commands into every batch. The hardware should recognise the no-ops and eliminate the expensive context loads, but we still have to pay the cost of using cross-powerwell register writes. In practice, this has no effect on actual context switch times, and only adds a few hundred nanoseconds to no-op switches. We can improve the latter by eliminating the w/a around known no-op switches, but there is an ulterior motive to keeping them. Always emitting the context switch at the beginning of the request (and relying on HW to skip unneeded switches) does have one key advantage. Should we implement request reordering on Haswell, we will not know in advance what the previous executing context was on the GPU and so we would not be able to elide the MI_SET_CONTEXT commands ourselves and always have to emit them. Having our hand forced now actually prepares us for later. Now since that context and mm follow the request, we no longer (and not for a long time since requests took over!) require a trace point to tell when we write the switch into the ring, since it is always. (This is even more important when you remember that simply writing into the ring bears no relation to the current mm.) v2: Sandybridge has to agree to use LRI as well. 2018-05-19drm/i915/execlists: Handle copying default context state for atomic resetChris Wilson
We want to be able to reset the GPU from inside a timer callback (hardirq context). One step requires us to copy the default context state over to the guilty context, which means we need to plan in advance to have that object accessible from within an atomic context. The atomic context prevents us from pinning the object or from peeking into the shmemfs backing store (all may sleep), so we choose to pin the default_state into memory when the engine becomes active. This compromise allows us to swap out the default state when idle, when required. We cannot call kthread_park() from softirq context, so let's avoid it entirely during the reset. We wanted to suspend the signaler so that it would not mark a request as complete at the same time as we marked it as being in error. 2018-05-02drm/i915: Split i915_gem_timeline into individual timelinesChris Wilson
We need to move to a more flexible timeline that doesn't assume one fence context per engine, and so allow for a single timeline to be used across a combination of engines. This means that preallocating a fence context per engine is now a hindrance, and so we want to introduce the singular timeline. From the code perspective, this has the notable advantage of clearing up a lot of mirky semantics and some clumsy pointer chasing. By splitting the timeline up into a single entity rather than an array of per-engine timelines, we can realise the goal of the previous patch of tracking the timeline alongside the ring. v2: Tweak wait_for_idle to stop the compiling thinking that ret may be uninitialised. 2018-05-02drm/i915: Move timeline from GTT to ringChris Wilson
In the future, we want to move a request between engines. To achieve this, we first realise that we have two timelines in effect here. The first runs through the GTT is required for ordering vma access, which is tracked currently by engine. The second is implied by sequential execution of commands inside the ringbuffer. This timeline is one that maps to userspace's expectations when submitting requests (i.e. given the same context, batch A is executed before batch B). As the rings's timelines map to userspace and the GTT timeline an implementation detail, move the timeline from the GTT into the ring itself (per-context in logical-ring-contexts/execlists, or a global per-engine timeline for the shared ringbuffers in legacy submission. The two timelines are still assumed to be equivalent at the moment (no migrating requests between engines yet) and so we can simply move from one to the other without adding extra ordering. v2: Reinforce that one isn't allowed to mix the engine execution timeline with the client timeline from userspace (on the ring). 2018-04-30drm/i915: Retire requests along ringsChris Wilson
In the next patch, rings are the central timeline as requests may jump between engines. Therefore in the future as we retire in order along the engine timeline, we may retire out-of-order within a ring (as the ring now occurs along multiple engines), leading to much hilarity in miscomputing the position of ring->head. As an added bonus, retiring along the ring reduces the penalty of having one execlists client do cleanup for another (old legacy submission shares a ring between all clients). The downside is that slow and irregular (off the critical path) process of cleaning up stale requests after userspace becomes a modicum less efficient. In the long run, it will become apparent that the ordered ring->request_list matches the ring->timeline, a fun challenge for the future will be unifying the two lists to avoid duplication! v2: We need both engine-order and ring-order processing to maintain our knowledge of where individual rings have completed upto as well as knowing what was last executing on any engine. And finally by decoupling retiring the contexts on the engine and the timelines along the rings, we do have to keep a reference to the context on each request (previously it was guaranteed by the context being pinned). v3: Not just a reference to the context, but we need to keep it pinned as we manipulate the rings; i.e. we need a pin for both the manipulation of the engine state during its retirements, and a separate pin for the manipulation of the ring state. We can convert engine stats from a spinlock to seqlock to ensure interrupt processing is never even a tiny bit delayed by parallel readers. There is a smidgen bit more cost on the write lock side, and an extremely unlikely chance that readers will have to retry a few times in face of heavy interrupt load. But it should be extremely unlikely given how lightweight read side section is compared to the interrupt processing side, and also compared to the rest of the code paths which can lead into it. Furthermore, writer is the ones doing the real, latency sensitive work, while readers are only informative. There is some redundancy between dma_fence->ops->enable_signaling (via i915_fence_enable_signaling) and our backend, intel_engine_enable_signaling() in that both levels recheck the fence status multiple times. If we convert intel_engine_enable_signaling() to return the information desired by dma_fence->ops->enable_signaling, we can reduce i915_fence_enable_signaling to a simple stub and avoid trying to reinterpret the same information. Enhanced Execlists is an upgraded version of execlists which supports up to 8 ports. The lrcs to be submitted are written to a submit queue (the ExecLists Submission Queue - ELSQ), which is then loaded on the HW. When writing to the ELSP register, the lrcs are written cyclically in the queue from position 0 to position 7. Alternatively, it is possible to write directly in the individual positions of the queue using the ELSQC registers. 2018-03-06drm/i915/breadcrumbs: Reduce signaler rbtree to a sorted listChris Wilson
The goal here is to try and reduce the latency of signaling additional requests following the wakeup from interrupt by reducing the list of to-be-signaled requests from an rbtree to a sorted linked list. The original choice of using an rbtree was to facilitate random insertions of request into the signaler while maintaining a sorted list. However, if we assume that most new requests are added when they are submitted, we see those new requests in execution order making a insertion sort fast, and the reduction in overhead of each signaler iteration significant. Since commit 56299fb7d904 ("drm/i915: Signal first fence from irq handler if complete"), we signal most fences directly from notify_ring() in the interrupt handler greatly reducing the amount of work that actually needs to be done by the signaler kthread. All the thread is then required to do is operate as the bottom-half, cleaning up after the interrupt handler and preparing the next waiter. This includes signaling all later completed fences in a saturated system, but on a mostly idle system we only have to rebuild the wait rbtree in time for the next interrupt. With this de-emphasis of the signaler's role, we want to rejig it's datastructures to reduce the amount of work we require to both setup the signal tree and maintain it on every interrupt. 2018-02-23drm/i915/preemption: Allow preemption between submission portsChris Wilson
Sometimes we need to boost the priority of an in-flight request, which may lead to the situation where the second submission port then contains a higher priority context than the first and so we need to inject a preemption event. To do so we must always check inside execlists_dequeue() whether there is a priority inversion between the ports themselves as well as the head of the priority sorted queue, and we cannot just skip dequeuing if the queue is empty. As Michał noted, this doesn't simply extend to handling more than 2-port submission, as we may need to reorder within the array of executing requests which themselves are lower priority than the first. We want to de-emphasize the link between the request (dependency, execution and fence tracking) from GEM and so rename the struct from drm_i915_gem_request to i915_request. That is we may implement the GEM user interface on top of requests, but they are an abstraction for tracking execution rather than an implementation detail of GEM. (Since they are not tied to HW, we keep the i915 prefix as opposed to intel.) In short, the spatch: @@ @@ - struct drm_i915_gem_request + struct i915_request A corollary to contracting the type name, we also harmonise on using 'rq' shorthand for local variables where space if of the essence and repetition makes 'request' unwieldy. Commit 99e48bf98dd0 ("drm/i915: Lock out execlist tasklet while peeking inside for busy-stats") added a tasklet_disable call in busy stats enabling, but we failed to understand that the PMU enable callback runs as an hard IRQ (IPI). Consequence of this is that the PMU enable callback can interrupt the execlists tasklet, and will then deadlock when it calls intel_engine_stats_enable->tasklet_disable. To fix this, I realized it is possible to move the engine stats enablement and disablement to PMU event init and destroy hooks. This allows for much simpler implementation since those hooks run in normal context (can sleep). v2: Extract engine_event_destroy. Currently on every submission, we recalculate the ELSP register offset for the engine, after chasing the pointers to find the iomem base. Since this is fixed for the lifetime of the driver, record the offset in the execlists struct. In practice the difference is negligible, it just happens to remove 27 bytes of eyesore pointer dancing from next to the hottest instruction (which is itself due to stalling for a cache miss) in perf profiles of the execlists_submission_tasklet(). v2: Trim off one more elsp local. Sagar noticed the check can be consolidated between the engine stats implementation and the PMU. My first choice was a static inline helper but that got into include ordering mess quickly fast so I went with a macro instead. At some point we should perhaps looking into taking out the non-ringubffer bits from intel_ringbuffer.h into a new intel_engine.h or something. v2: Use engine->flags. 2017-11-23drm/i915: Unwind incomplete legacy context switchesChris Wilson
The legacy context switch for ringbuffer submission is multistaged, where each of those stages may fail. However, we were updating global state after some stages, and so we had to force the incomplete request to be submitted because we could not unwind. Save the global state before performing the switches, and so enable us to unwind back to the previous global state should any phase fail.
