Dell USB Type C docking WD19/WD19DC attaches additional peripherals as:
/: Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 5000M
|__ Port 1: Dev 11, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 5000M
|__ Port 3: Dev 12, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 5000M
|__ Port 4: Dev 13, If 0, Class=Vendor Specific Class,
Driver=r8152, 5000M
where usb 2-1-3 is a hub connecting all USB Type-A/C ports on the dock.
When hotplugging such dock with additional usb devices already attached on
it, the probing process may reset usb 2.1 port, therefore r8152 ethernet
device is also reset. However, during r8152 device init there are several
for-loops that, when it's unable to retrieve hardware registers due to
being disconnected from USB, may take up to 14 seconds each in practice,
and that has to be completed before USB may re-enumerate devices on the
bus. As a result, devices attached to the dock will only be available
after nearly 1 minute after the dock was plugged in:
[ 216.388290] [250] r8152 2-1.4:1.0: usb_probe_interface
[ 216.388292] [250] r8152 2-1.4:1.0: usb_probe_interface - got id
[ 258.830410] r8152 2-1.4:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): PHY not ready
[ 258.830460] r8152 2-1.4:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Invalid header when reading pass-thru MAC addr
[ 258.830464] r8152 2-1.4:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Get ether addr fail
This happens in, for example, r8153_init:
static int generic_ocp_read(struct r8152 *tp, u16 index, u16 size,
void *data, u16 type)
{
if (test_bit(RTL8152_UNPLUG, &tp->flags))
return -ENODEV;
...
}
static u16 ocp_read_word(struct r8152 *tp, u16 type, u16 index)
{
u32 data;
...
generic_ocp_read(tp, index, sizeof(tmp), &tmp, type | byen);
data = __le32_to_cpu(tmp);
...
return (u16)data;
}
static void r8153_init(struct r8152 *tp)
{
...
if (test_bit(RTL8152_UNPLUG, &tp->flags))
return;
for (i = 0; i < 500; i++) {
if (ocp_read_word(tp, MCU_TYPE_PLA, PLA_BOOT_CTRL) &
AUTOLOAD_DONE)
break;
msleep(20);
}
...
}
Since ocp_read_word() doesn't check the return status of
generic_ocp_read(), and the only exit condition for the loop is to have
a match in the returned value, such loops will only ends after exceeding
its maximum runs when the device has been marked as disconnected, which
takes 500 * 20ms = 10 seconds in theory, 14 in practice.
To solve this long latency another test to RTL8152_UNPLUG flag should be
added after those 20ms sleep to skip unnecessary loops, so that the device
probe can complete early and proceed to parent port reset/reprobe process.
This can be reproduced on all kernel versions up to latest v5.6-rc2, but
after v5.5-rc7 the reproduce rate is dramatically lowered to 1/30 or less
while it was around 1/2.

[ Upstream commit 88bf54603f6f2c137dfee1abf6436ceac3528d2d ]
Commit f25e1392fdb5 removed the support for the pre-production variant
of the Dell DW5821e to avoid probing another USB interface unnecessarily.
However, the pre-production samples are found in the wild, and this lack
of support is causing problems for users of such samples. It is therefore
necessary to support both variants.
Matching on both interfaces 0 and 1 is not expected to cause any problem
with either variant, as only the QMI function will be probed successfully
on either. Interface 1 will be rejected based on the HID class for the
production variant:

As reported by Eric Dumazet, there are still some outstanding
cases where the driver does not handle TSO correctly when skb's
are over a certain size. Most cases have been fixed, this patch
should ensure that forwarded SKB's that are greater than
MAX_SINGLE_PACKET_SIZE - TX_OVERHEAD are software segmented
and handled correctly.

lan78xx_tx_bh() makes sure to not exceed MAX_SINGLE_PACKET_SIZE
bytes in the aggregated packets it builds, but does
nothing to prevent large GSO packets being submitted.
Pierre-Francois reported various hangs when/if TSO is enabled.
For localy generated packets, we can use netif_set_gso_max_size()
to limit the size of TSO packets.
Note that forwarded packets could still hit the issue,
so a complete fix might require implementing .ndo_features_check
for this driver, forcing a software segmentation if the size
of the TSO packet exceeds MAX_SINGLE_PACKET_SIZE.

Lan78xx driver accesses the PHY registers through MDIO bus over USB
connection. When performing a suspend/resume, the PHY registers can be
accessed before the USB connection is resumed. This will generate an
error and will prevent the device to resume correctly.
This patch adds the dependency between the MDIO bus and USB device to
allow correct handling of suspend/resume.

get_registers() blindly copies the memory written to by the
usb_control_msg() call even if the underlying urb failed.
This could lead to junk register values being read by the driver, since
some indirect callers of get_registers() ignore the return values. One
example is:
ocp_read_dword() ignores the return value of generic_ocp_read(), which
calls get_registers().
So, emulate PCI "Master Abort" behavior by setting the buffer to all
0xFFs when usb_control_msg() fails.

[ 355.960428] usb 1-4: bad CDC descriptors
The problem is a failsafe test intended to filter out ACM serial
functions using the same 02/02/ff class/subclass/protocol as RNDIS.
The serial functions are recognized by their non-zero bmCapabilities.
No RNDIS function with non-zero bmCapabilities were known at the time
this failsafe was added. But it turns out that some Wireless class
RNDIS functions are using the bmCapabilities field. These functions
are uniquely identified as RNDIS by their class/subclass/protocol, so
the failing test can safely be disabled. The same applies to the two
types of Misc class RNDIS functions.
Applying the failsafe to Communication class functions only retains
the original functionality, and fixes the problem for the Mediatek based
smartphone.

The Mediatek example is believed to apply to most smartphones with
Mediatek firmware. The ZTE example is most likely also part of a larger
family of devices/firmwares.

In kalmia_init_and_get_ethernet_addr(), 'usb_buf' is allocated through
kmalloc(). In the following execution, if the 'status' returned by
kalmia_send_init_packet() is not 0, 'usb_buf' is not deallocated, leading
to memory leaks. To fix this issue, add the 'out' label to free 'usb_buf'.

In cx82310_bind(), 'dev->partial_data' is allocated through kmalloc().
Then, the execution waits for the firmware to become ready. If the firmware
is not ready in time, the execution is terminated. However, the allocated
'dev->partial_data' is not deallocated on this path, leading to a memory
leak bug. To fix this issue, free 'dev->partial_data' before returning the
error.

[ Upstream commit 94d250fae48e6f873d8362308f5c4d02cd1b1fd2 ]
Fix a racing condition in ipheth.c that can lead to slow performance.
Bug: In ipheth_tx(), netif_wake_queue() may be called on the callback
ipheth_sndbulk_callback(), _before_ netif_stop_queue() is called.
When this happens, the queue is stopped longer than it needs to be,
thus reducing network performance.
Fix: Move netif_stop_queue() in front of usb_submit_urb(). Now the order
is always correct. In case, usb_submit_urb() fails, the queue is woken up
again as callback will not fire.
Testing: This racing condition is usually not noticeable, as it has to
occur very frequently to slowdown the network. The callback from the USB
is usually triggered slow enough, so the situation does not appear.
However, on a Ubuntu Linux on VMWare Workstation, running on Windows 10,
the we loose the race quite often and the following speedup can be noticed:

The crash happens roughly 125..130ms after the disconnect. This
correlates with the 'delay' timer that is started on certain USB tx/rx
errors in the URB completion handler.
The problem is a race of usbnet_stop() with usbnet_start_xmit(). In
usbnet_stop() we call usbnet_terminate_urbs() to cancel all URBs in
flight. This only makes sense if no new URBs are submitted
concurrently, though. But the usbnet_start_xmit() can run at the same
time on another CPU which almost unconditionally submits an URB. The
error callback of the new URB will then schedule the timer after it was
already stopped.
The fix adds a check if the tx queue is stopped after the tx list lock
has been taken. This should reliably prevent the submission of new URBs
while usbnet_terminate_urbs() does its job. The same thing is done on
the rx side even though it might be safe due to other flags that are
checked there.

commit bb1b40c7cb863f0800a6410c7dcb86cf3f28d3b1 upstream.
iOS devices require the host to be "trusted" before servicing network
packets. Establishing trust requires the user to confirm a dialog on the
iOS device.Until trust is established, the iOS device will silently discard
network packets from the host. Currently, the ipheth driver does not detect
whether an iOS device has established trust with the host, and immediately
sets up the transmit queues.
This causes the following problems:
- Kernel taint due to WARN() in netdev watchdog.
- Dmesg spam ("TX timeout").
- Disruption of user space networking activity (dhcpd, etc...) when new
interface comes up but cannot be used.
- Unnecessary host and device wakeups and USB traffic
Example dmesg output:

[ 1101.320110] ipheth 1-5:4.2: ipheth_tx_timeout: TX timeout
The last message "TX timeout" is repeated every 5 seconds until trust is
established or the device is disconnected, filling up dmesg.
The proposed patch eliminates the problem by, upon connection, keeping the
TX queue and carrier disabled until a packet is first received from the iOS
device. This is reflected by the confirmed_pairing variable in the device
structure. Only after at least one packet has been received from the iOS
device, the transmit queue and carrier are brought up during the periodic
device poll in ipheth_carrier_set. Because the iOS device will always send
a packet immediately upon trust being established, this should not delay
the interface becoming useable. To prevent failed UBRs in
ipheth_rcvbulk_callback from perpetually re-enabling the queue if it was
disabled, a new check is added so only successful transfers re-enable the
queue, whereas failed transfers only trigger an immediate poll.
This has the added benefit of removing the periodic control requests to the
iOS device until trust has been established and thus should reduce wakeup
events on both the host and the iOS device.

commit 39fba7835aacda65284a86e611774cbba71dac20 upstream.
We can use skb_cow_head() to properly deal with clones,
especially the ones coming from TCP stack that allow their head being
modified. This avoids a copy.

commit 6bc6895bdd6744e0136eaa4a11fbdb20a7db4e40 upstream.
We need to ensure there is enough headroom to push extra header,
but we also need to check if we are allowed to change headers.
skb_cow_head() is the proper helper to deal with this.

[ Upstream commit 15515aaaa69659c502003926a2067ee76176148a ]
Current state for the lan78xx driver does not allow for changing the
MAC address of the interface, without either removing the module (if
you compiled it that way) or rebooting the machine. If you attempt to
change the MAC address, ifconfig will show the new address, however,
the system/interface will not respond to any traffic using that
configuration. A few short-term options to work around this are to
unload the module and reload it with the new MAC address, change the
interface to "promisc", or reboot with the correct configuration to
change the MAC.
This patch enables the ability to change the MAC address via fairly normal means...
ifdown <interface>
modify entry in /etc/network/interfaces OR a similar method
ifup <interface>
Then test via any network communication, such as ICMP requests to gateway.
My only test platform for this patch has been a raspberry pi model 3b+.

commit 102cd909635612c0be784a519651954a7924c786 upstream.
SIMCOM are reusing a single device ID for many (all of their?)
different modems, based on different chipsets and firmwares. Newer
Qualcomm chipset generations require setting DTR to wake the QMI
function. The SIM7600E modem is using such a chipset, making it
fail to work with this driver despite the device ID match.
Fix by unconditionally enabling the SET_DTR quirk for all SIMCOM
modems using this specific device ID. This is similar to what
we already have done for another case of device IDs recycled over
multiple chipset generations: 14cf4a771b30 ("drivers: net: usb:
qmi_wwan: add QMI_QUIRK_SET_DTR for Telit PID 0x1201")
Initial testing on an older SIM7100 modem shows no immediate side
effects.

commit 5146f95df782b0ac61abde36567e718692725c89 upstream.
The function hso_probe reads if_num from the USB device (as an u8) and uses
it without a length check to index an array, resulting in an OOB memory read
in hso_probe or hso_get_config_data.

error.

[ Upstream commit 45611c61dd503454b2edae00aabe1e429ec49ebe ]
The bug is not easily reproducable, as it may occur very infrequently
(we had machines with 20minutes heavy downloading before it occurred)
However, on a virual machine (VMWare on Windows 10 host) it occurred
pretty frequently (1-2 seconds after a speedtest was started)
dev->tx_skb mab be freed via dev_kfree_skb_irq on a callback
before it is set.
This causes the following problems:
- double free of the skb or potential memory leak
- in dmesg: 'recvmsg bug' and 'recvmsg bug 2' and eventually
general protection fault

The proposed patch eliminates a potential racing condition.
Before, usb_submit_urb was called and _after_ that, the skb was attached
(dev->tx_skb). So, on a callback it was possible, however unlikely that the
skb was freed before it was set. That way (because dev->tx_skb was not set
to NULL after it was freed), it could happen that a skb from a earlier
transmission was freed a second time (and the skb we should have freed did
not get freed at all)
Now we free the skb directly in ipheth_tx(). It is not passed to the
callback anymore, eliminating the posibility of a double free of the same
skb. Depending on the retval of usb_submit_urb() we use dev_kfree_skb_any()
respectively dev_consume_skb_any() to free the skb.

There is a standard mechanism for locating and using a MAC address from
the Device Tree. Use this facility in the lan78xx driver to support
applications without programmed EEPROM or OTP. At the same time,
regularise the handling of the different address sources.

[ Upstream commit 7b900ead6cc66b2ee873cb042dfba169aa68b56c ]
We need to make sure, that the carrier check polling is disabled
while suspending. Otherwise we can end up with usbnet_read_cmd()
being issued when only usbnet_read_cmd_nopm() is allowed. If this
happens, read operations lock up.

[ Upstream commit 6314dab4b8fb8493d810e175cb340376052c69b6 ]
The GetNtbFormat and SetNtbFormat requests operate on 16 bit little
endian values. We get away with ignoring this most of the time, because
we only care about USB_CDC_NCM_NTB16_FORMAT which is 0x0000. This
fails for USB_CDC_NCM_NTB32_FORMAT.
Fix comparison between LE value from device and constant by converting
the constant to LE.

but will conditionally set the device as wake-up enabled or not based on
that, which could be a very confusing user experience.
