2013-05-12lockdep: remove task argument from debug_check_no_locks_heldColin Cross
The only existing caller to debug_check_no_locks_held calls it with 'current' as the task, and the freezer needs to call debug_check_no_locks_held but doesn't already have a current task pointer, so remove the argument. It is already assuming that the current task is relevant by dumping the current stack trace as part of the warning. This was originally part of 6aa9707099c (lockdep: check that no locks held at freeze time) which was reverted in dbf520a9d7d4. 2013-04-29debug_locks.h: make warning more verboseJames Hogan
The WARN_ON(1) in DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON is surprisingly awkward to track down when it's hit, as it's usually buried in macros, causing multiple instances to land on the same line number. This patch makes it more useful by switching to: WARN(1, "DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON(%s)", #c); so that the particular DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON is more easily identified and grep'd for. For example: WARNING: at kernel/mutex.c:198 _mutex_lock_nested+0x31c/0x380() DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON(l->magic != l) Signed-off-by: James Hogan <james.hogan@imgtec.com> Cc: Paul Gortmaker <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com> Cc: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2013-02-27lockdep: check that no locks held at freeze timeMandeep Singh Baines
We shouldn't try_to_freeze if locks are held. Holding a lock can cause a deadlock if the lock is later acquired in the suspend or hibernate path (e.g. by dpm). Holding a lock can also cause a deadlock in the case of cgroup_freezer if a lock is held inside a frozen cgroup that is later acquired by a process outside that group. 2012-03-28Merge tag 'split-asm_system_h-for-linus-20120328' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-asm_system Pull "Disintegrate and delete asm/system.h" from David Howells: "Here are a bunch of patches to disintegrate asm/system.h into a set of separate bits to relieve the problem of circular inclusion dependencies. I've built all the working defconfigs from all the arches that I can and made sure that they don't break. The reason for these patches is that I recently encountered a circular dependency problem that came about when I produced some patches to optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2(). This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h. The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg. memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()). These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces: (1) asm/barrier.h Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha. (2) asm/switch_to.h Move switch_to() and related stuff here. (3) asm/exec.h Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h. (4) asm/cmpxchg.h Move xchg() and cmpxchg() here as they're full word atomic ops and frequently used by atomic_xchg() and atomic_cmpxchg(). (5) asm/bug.h Move die() and related bits. (6) asm/auxvec.h Move AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH here. Other arch headers are created as needed on a per-arch basis." Fixed up some conflicts from other header file cleanups and moving code around that has happened in the meantime, so David's testing is somewhat weakened by that. We'll find out anything that got broken and fix it.. * tag 'split-asm_system_h-for-linus-20120328' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-asm_system: (38 commits) Delete all instances of asm/system.h Remove all #inclusions of asm/system.h Add #includes needed to permit the removal of asm/system.h Move all declarations of free_initmem() to linux/mm.h Disintegrate asm/system.h for OpenRISC Split arch_align_stack() out from asm-generic/system.h Split the switch_to() wrapper out of asm-generic/system.h Move the asm-generic/system.h xchg() implementation to asm-generic/cmpxchg.h Create asm-generic/barrier.h Make asm-generic/cmpxchg.h #include asm-generic/cmpxchg-local.h Disintegrate asm/system.h for Xtensa Disintegrate asm/system.h for Unicore32 [based on ver #3, changed by gxt] Disintegrate asm/system.h for Tile Disintegrate asm/system.h for Sparc Disintegrate asm/system.h for SH Disintegrate asm/system.h for Score Disintegrate asm/system.h for S390 Disintegrate asm/system.h for PowerPC Disintegrate asm/system.h for PA-RISC Disintegrate asm/system.h for MN10300 ...

2012-03-04BUG: headers with BUG/BUG_ON etc. need linux/bug.hPaul Gortmaker
If a header file is making use of BUG, BUG_ON, BUILD_BUG_ON, or any other BUG variant in a static inline (i.e. not in a #define) then that header really should be including <linux/bug.h> and not just expecting it to be implicitly present. We can make this change risk-free, since if the files using these headers didn't have exposure to linux/bug.h already, they would have been causing compile failures/warnings. 2009-04-14lockdep: warn about lockdep disabling after kernel taint, fixIngo Molnar
Impact: build fix for Sparc and s390 Stephen Rothwell reported that the Sparc build broke: In file included from kernel/panic.c:12: include/linux/debug_locks.h: In function '__debug_locks_off': include/linux/debug_locks.h:15: error: implicit declaration of function 'xchg' due to: 9eeba61: lockdep: warn about lockdep disabling after kernel taint There is some inconsistency between architectures about where exactly xchg() is defined. The traditional place is in system.h but the more logical point for it is in atomic.h - where most architectures (especially new ones) have it defined. These architecture also still offer it via system.h. Some, such as Sparc or s390 only have it in asm/system.h and not available via asm/atomic.h at all. Use the widest set of headers in debug_locks.h and also include asm/system.h. Reported-by: Stephen Rothwell <sfr@canb.auug.org.au> Cc: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: "David S. 2009-04-12lockdep: warn about lockdep disabling after kernel taintFrederic Weisbecker
Impact: provide useful missing info for developers Kernel taint can occur in several situations such as warnings, load of prorietary or staging modules, bad page, etc... But when such taint happens, a developer might still be working on the kernel, expecting that lockdep is still enabled. But a taint disables lockdep without ever warning about it. Such a kernel behaviour doesn't really help for kernel development. This patch adds this missing warning. Since the taint is done most of the time after the main message that explain the real source issue, it seems safe to warn about it inside add_taint() so that it appears at last, without hurting the main information. v2: Use a generic helper to disable lockdep instead of an open coded xchg(). 2008-09-12lock debug: sit tight when we are already in a panicAndrew Morton
in: > http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11543 The panic code called the kexec code which called mutex_trylock() which called spin_lock_mutex() which then stupidly went and blurted a load of debug stuff because of in_interrupt(). These two macros are useful beyond lock debugging. 2006-07-03[PATCH] lockdep: better lock debuggingIngo Molnar
Generic lock debugging: - generalized lock debugging framework. For example, a bug in one lock subsystem turns off debugging in all lock subsystems. - got rid of the caller address passing (__IP__/__IP_DECL__/etc.) from the mutex/rtmutex debugging code: it caused way too much prototype hackery, and lockdep will give the same information anyway. - ability to do silent tests - check lock freeing in vfree too. - more finegrained debugging options, to allow distributions to turn off more expensive debugging features. There's no separate 'held mutexes' list anymore - but there's a 'held locks' stack within lockdep, which unifies deadlock detection across all lock classes. (this is independent of the lockdep validation stuff - lockdep first checks whether we are holding a lock already) Here are the current debugging options: CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES=y CONFIG_DEBUG_LOCK_ALLOC=y which do: config DEBUG_MUTEXES bool "Mutex debugging, basic checks" config DEBUG_LOCK_ALLOC bool "Detect incorrect freeing of live mutexes" Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
