2012-01-17ipv6: fix per device IP snmp countersEric Dumazet
In commit 4ce3c183fca (snmp: 64bit ipstats_mib for all arches), I forgot to change the /proc/net/dev_snmp6/xxx output for IP counters. percpu array is 64bit per counter but the folding still used the 'long' variant, and output garbage on 32bit arches. 2011-11-14ipv6: reduce percpu needs for icmpv6msg mibsEric Dumazet
Reading /proc/net/snmp6 on a machine with a lot of cpus is very expensive (can be ~88000 us). This is because ICMPV6MSG MIB uses 4096 bytes per cpu, and folding values for all possible cpus can read 16 Mbytes of memory (32MBytes on non x86 arches) ICMP messages are not considered as fast path on a typical server, and eventually few cpus handle them anyway. We can afford an atomic operation instead of using percpu data. This saves 4096 bytes per cpu and per network namespace. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-10-31net: Add export.h for EXPORT_SYMBOL/THIS_MODULE to non-modulesPaul Gortmaker
These files are non modular, but need to export symbols using the macros now living in export.h -- call out the include so that things won't break when we remove the implicit presence of module.h from everywhere. Signed-off-by: Paul Gortmaker <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com>
2011-05-19ipv6: reduce per device ICMP mib sizesEric Dumazet
ipv6 has per device ICMP SNMP counters, taking too much space because they use percpu storage. needed size per device is : (512+4)*sizeof(long)*number_of_possible_cpus*2 On a 32bit kernel, 16 possible cpus, this wastes more than 64kbytes of memory per ipv6 enabled network device, taken in vmalloc pool. Since ICMP messages are rare, just use shared counters (atomic_long_t) Per network space ICMP counters are still using percpu memory, we might also convert them to shared counters in a future patch. 2010-10-30ipv6/udp: report SndbufErrors and RcvbufErrorsEric Dumazet
commit a18135eb9389 (Add UDP_MIB_{SND,RCV}BUFERRORS handling.) forgot to make the necessary changes in net/ipv6/proc.c to report additional counters in /proc/net/snmp6 Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2010-06-30snmp: 64bit ipstats_mib for all archesEric Dumazet
/proc/net/snmp and /proc/net/netstat expose SNMP counters. Width of these counters is either 32 or 64 bits, depending on the size of "unsigned long" in kernel. This means user program parsing these files must already be prepared to deal with 64bit values, regardless of user program being 32 or 64 bit. This patch introduces 64bit snmp values for IPSTAT mib, where some counters can wrap pretty fast if they are 32bit wide. # netstat -s|egrep "InOctets|OutOctets" InOctets: 244068329096 OutOctets: 244069348848 Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-05-17net: Remove unnecessary returns from void function()sJoe Perches
This patch removes from net/ (but not any netfilter files) all the unnecessary return; statements that precede the last closing brace of void functions. It does not remove the returns that are immediately preceded by a label as gcc doesn't like that. Done via: $ grep -rP --include=*.[ch] -l "return;\n}" net/ | \ xargs perl -i -e 'local $/ ; while (<>) { s/\n[ \t\n]+return;\n}/\n}/g; print; }' Signed-off-by: Joe Perches <joe@perches.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-04-03icmp: Account for ICMP out errorsEric Dumazet
When ip_append() fails because of socket limit or memory shortage, increment ICMP_MIB_OUTERRORS counter, so that "netstat -s" can report these errors. LANG=C netstat -s | grep "ICMP messages failed" 0 ICMP messages failed For IPV6, implement ICMP6_MIB_OUTERRORS counter as well. # grep Icmp6OutErrors /proc/net/dev_snmp6/* /proc/net/dev_snmp6/eth0:Icmp6OutErrors 0 /proc/net/dev_snmp6/lo:Icmp6OutErrors 0 Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2010-02-16percpu: add __percpu sparse annotations to netTejun Heo
Add __percpu sparse annotations to net. These annotations are to make sparse consider percpu variables to be in a different address space and warn if accessed without going through percpu accessors. This patch doesn't affect normal builds. The macro and type tricks around snmp stats make things a bit interesting. DEFINE/DECLARE_SNMP_STAT() macros mark the target field as __percpu and SNMP_UPD_PO_STATS() macro is updated accordingly. All snmp_mib_*() users which used to cast the argument to (void **) are updated to cast it to (void __percpu **). Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Acked-by: David S. 2009-04-27snmp: add missing counters for RFC 4293Neil Horman
The IP MIB (RFC 4293) defines stats for InOctets, OutOctets, InMcastOctets and OutMcastOctets: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4293 But it seems we don't track those in any way that easy to separate from other protocols. 2008-10-07ipv6: separate seq_ops for global & per/device ipv6 statisticsDenis V. Lunev
idev has been stored on seq->private. NULL has been stored for global statistics. The situation is changed with net namespace. We need to store pointer to struct net and the only place is seq->private. So, we'll have for /proc/net/dev_snmp6/* and for /proc/net/snmp6 pointers of two different types stored in the same field. This effectively requires to separate seq_ops of these files. Signed-off-by: Denis V. Lunev <den@openvz.org> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2008-03-06[UDP]: Revert udplite and code split.David S. Miller
This reverts commit db1ed684f6c430c4cdad67d058688b8a1b5e607c ("[IPV6] UDP: Rename IPv6 UDP files."), commit 8be8af8fa4405652e6c0797db5465a4be8afb998 ("[IPV4] UDP: Move IPv4-specific bits to other file.") and commit e898d4db2749c6052072e9bc4448e396cbdeb06a ("[UDP]: Allow users to configure UDP-Lite."). First, udplite is of such small cost, and it is a core protocol just like TCP and normal UDP are. We spent enormous amounts of effort to make udplite share as much code with core UDP as possible. All of that work is less valuable if we're just going to slap a config option on udplite support. It is also causing build failures, as reported on linux-next, showing that the changeset was not tested very well. In fact, this is the second build failure resulting from the udplite change. Finally, the config options provided was a bool, instead of a modular option. Meaning the udplite code does not even get build tested by allmodconfig builds, and furthermore the user is not presented with a reasonable modular build option which is particularly needed by distribution vendors. 2007-11-07[NET]: Define infrastructure to keep 'inuse' changes in an efficent SMP/NUMA ↵Eric Dumazet
way. "struct proto" currently uses an array stats[NR_CPUS] to track change on 'inuse' sockets per protocol. If NR_CPUS is big, this means we use a big memory area for this. Moreover, all this memory area is located on a single node on NUMA machines, increasing memory pressure on the boot node. In this patch, I tried to : - Keep a fast !CONFIG_SMP implementation - Keep a fast CONFIG_SMP implementation for often used protocols (tcp,udp,raw,...) - Introduce a NUMA efficient implementation Some helper macros are defined in include/net/sock.h These macros take into account CONFIG_SMP If a "struct proto" is declared without using DEFINE_PROTO_INUSE / REF_PROTO_INUSE macros, it will automatically use a default implementation, using a dynamically allocated percpu zone. This default implementation will be NUMA efficient, but might use 32/64 bytes per possible cpu because of current alloc_percpu() implementation. However it still should be better than previous implementation based on stats[NR_CPUS] field. When a "struct proto" is changed to use the new macros, we use a single static "int" percpu variable, lowering the memory and cpu costs, still preserving NUMA efficiency. 2007-10-15[INET]: Collect frag queues management objects togetherPavel Emelyanov
There are some objects that are common in all the places which are used to keep track of frag queues, they are: * hash table * LRU list * rw lock * rnd number for hash function * the number of queues * the amount of memory occupied by queues * secret timer Move all this stuff into one structure (struct inet_frags) to make it possible use them uniformly in the future. Like with the previous patch this mostly consists of hunks like - write_lock(&ipfrag_lock); + write_lock(&ip4_frags.lock); To address the issue with exporting the number of queues and the amount of memory occupied by queues outside the .c file they are declared in, I introduce a couple of helpers. 2007-10-10[IPV6]: Add ICMPMsgStats MIB (RFC 4293) [rev 2]David L Stevens
Background: RFC 4293 deprecates existing individual, named ICMP type counters to be replaced with the ICMPMsgStatsTable. This table includes entries for both IPv4 and IPv6, and requires counting of all ICMP types, whether or not the machine implements the type. These patches "remove" (but not really) the existing counters, and replace them with the ICMPMsgStats tables for v4 and v6. It includes the named counters in the /proc places they were, but gets the values for them from the new tables. It also counts packets generated from raw socket output (e.g., OutEchoes, MLD queries, RA's from radvd, etc). Changes: 1) create icmpmsg_statistics mib 2) create icmpv6msg_statistics mib 3) modify existing counters to use these 4) modify /proc/net/snmp to add "IcmpMsg" with all ICMP types listed by number for easy SNMP parsing 5) modify /proc/net/snmp printing for "Icmp" to get the named data from new counters. [new to 2nd revision] 6) support per-interface ICMP stats 7) use common macro for per-device stat macros Signed-off-by: David L Stevens <dlstevens@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2007-10-10[NET]: Make /proc/net per network namespaceEric W. Biederman
This patch makes /proc/net per network namespace. It modifies the global variables proc_net and proc_net_stat to be per network namespace. The proc_net file helpers are modified to take a network namespace argument, and all of their callers are fixed to pass &init_net for that argument. This ensures that all of the /proc/net files are only visible and usable in the initial network namespace until the code behind them has been updated to be handle multiple network namespaces. Making /proc/net per namespace is necessary as at least some files in /proc/net depend upon the set of network devices which is per network namespace, and even more files in /proc/net have contents that are relevant to a single network namespace.
