In 2016 GNU Make made a backwards incompatible change to the way '#' characters were handled in Makefiles when used inside functions or macros: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/make.git/commit/?id=c6966b323811c37acedff05b57 Due to this change, when attempting to run `make prepare' I get a spurious make syntax error: /home/earnest/linux/tools/objtool/.fixdep.o.cmd:1: *** missing separator. Stop. When inspecting `.fixdep.o.cmd' it includes two lines which use unescaped comment characters at the top: \# cannot find fixdep (/home/earnest/linux/tools/objtool//fixdep) \# using basic dep data This is because `tools/build/Build.include' prints these '\#' characters: printf '\# cannot find fixdep (%s)\n' $(fixdep) > $(dot-target).cmd; \ printf '\# using basic dep data\n\n' >> $(dot-target).cmd; \ This completes commit 9564a8cf422d ("Kbuild: fix # escaping in .cmd files for future Make"). I tried building using a freshly built Make (4.2.1-69-g8a731d1), but already the objtool build broke with orc_dump.c: In function ‘orc_dump’: orc_dump.c:106:2: error: ‘elf_getshnum’ is deprecated [-Werror=deprecated-declarations] if (elf_getshdrnum(elf, &nr_sections)) { Turns out that with that new Make, the backslash was not removed, so cpp didn't see a #include directive, grep found nothing, and -DLIBELF_USE_DEPRECATED was wrongly put in CFLAGS. Now, that new Make behaviour is documented in their NEWS file: * WARNING: Backward-incompatibility! Number signs (#) appearing inside a macro reference or function invocation no longer introduce comments and should not be escaped with backslashes: thus a call such as: foo := $(shell echo '#') is legal. Previously the number sign needed to be escaped, for example: foo := $(shell echo '\#') Now this latter will resolve to "\#". If you want to write makefiles portable to both versions, assign the number sign to a variable: C := \# foo := $(shell echo '$C') This was claimed to be fixed in 3.81, but wasn't, for some reason. To detect this change search for 'nocomment' in the .FEATURES variable. This also fixes up the two make-cmd instances to replace # with $(pound) rather than with \#. There might very well be other places that need similar fixup in preparation for whatever future Make release contains the above change, but at least this builds an x86_64 defconfig with the new make. 2018-02-25tools build: Add tools tree support for 'make -s'Josh Poimboeuf
commit e572d0887137acfc53f18175522964ec19d88175 upstream. When doing a kernel build with 'make -s', everything is silenced except the objtool build. That's because the tools tree support for silent builds is some combination of missing and broken. Three changes are needed to fix it: - Makefile: propagate '-s' to the sub-make's MAKEFLAGS variable so the tools Makefiles can see it. - tools/scripts/Makefile.include: fix the tools Makefiles' ability to recognize '-s'. The MAKE_VERSION and MAKEFLAGS checks are copied from the top-level Makefile. This silences the "DESCEND objtool" message. - tools/build/Makefile.build: add support to the tools Build files for recognizing '-s'. Again the MAKE_VERSION and MAKEFLAGS checks are copied from the top-level Makefile. This silences all the object compile/link messages. In some cases, like for fixdep and shortly for jevents, we need to build a tool to run on the host that will be used in building a tool, such as perf, that is being cross compiled, so do like the kernel and provide HOSTCC, HOSTLD and HOSTAR to do that. That is not present on some libelf implementations, such as the one used in Alpine Linux: libelf-0.8.13. This ends up disabling the SDT code, that relies on this function. One alternative would be to provide an weak fallback implementation or the open coded variant used by the buildid sysfs notes reading code. 2016-01-28perf build: Fix feature-dump checks, we need to test all featuresJiri Olsa
I see problem with test-all case speedup, because it does not comprise checks for 32bits compilations, fix it. The problem could be noticed by calling: make -C tools/perf feature-dump That would end up misdetecting the feature-compile-x32, that, building using 'gcc -mx32' needs stub headers not present in a fedora 23 devel machine and thus fail to compile, but ended up appearing as detected, i.e. present in tools/perf/FEATURE-DUMP as 'feature-compile-x32=1'. With this fix it correctly appears as 'feature-compile-x32=0' and if we uninstall the libc devel files for 32 bits (glibc-devel.i686), then the relevant variable is flipped from 'feature-compile-32=1' to 'feature-compile-32=0'. The test-all.c file doesn't check BPF related features. For an environment with all other features enabled, BPF would be considered enabled without doing real feature check. When building perf binaries outside the source tree with 'make O=<dir>', the auto-detected features get re-tested for every build, which is unnecessary and inconsistent with the behavior seen when building directly in the source tree. Another issue is that 'make O=<dir> clean' doesn't remove the feature files from the object tree. Fix these problems by looking for the binaries in the $(OUTPUT) directory. Any CFLAGS or LDFLAGS set by the user need to be passed to the feature build command. This many include for example -I or -L to point to libraries and include files in custom paths. In most of the test-*.bin rules in build/feature/Makefile, we use the BUILD macro which always sends in CFLAGS and LDFLAGS. The libiberty build line however doesn't use the BUILD macro and thus needs to send in CFLAGS and LDFLAGS explicitly. 2015-10-28perf tools: Make perf depend on libbpfWang Nan
By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set. The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent are wired into Makefile.perf. MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'. Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make. The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in /path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel. Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check failed. tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags. For dependency tracking we currently use targets that fall out of the gcc -MD command. We store this info in the .cmd file and include as makefile during the build. This format put object as target and all the c and header files as dependencies, like: util/abspath.o: util/abspath.c /usr/include/stdc-predef.h util/cache.h \ /usr/include/bits/wordsize.h /usr/include/gnu/stubs.h \ ... If any of those dependency header files (krava.h below) is removed the build fails on: make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'krava.h', needed by 'inc.o'. Stop. This patch adds fixdep helper, that is used by kbuild to alter the shape of the object dependencies like: source_util/abspath.o := util/abspath.c deps_util/abspath.o := \ /usr/include/stdc-predef.h \ util/cache.h \ ... util/abspath.o: $(deps_util/abspath.o) $(deps_util/abspath.o): With this format the header removal won't make the build fail, because it'll be picked up by the last empty target defined for each header. As previously mentioned the fixdep tool is taken from kbuild. It's not complete backport, only the part that alters the standard dependency info was taken, the part that adds the CONFIG_* dependency logic will be probably taken later on. 2015-08-26tools build: Allow duplicate objects in the object listJiri Olsa
It's sometimes useful to specify the object affiliation to multiple config options like: libperf-$(CONFIG_X86) += tsc.o libperf-$(CONFIG_AUXTRACE) += tsc.o while the object itself is linked only once. Adding the support for this and ignoring duplicate objects in the object list. 2015-08-17perf tools: Add Intel PT instruction decoderAdrian Hunter
Add support for decoding instructions for Intel Processor Trace. The kernel x86 instruction decoder is copied for this. This essentially provides intel_pt_get_insn() which takes a binary buffer, uses the kernel's x86 instruction decoder to get details of the instruction and then categorizes it for consumption by an Intel PT decoder. 2015-08-13perf tools: Support static linking with libdwAndi Kleen
The Fedora 22 version of libdw requires a couple of extra libraries to link. With a dynamic link the dependencies are pulled in automatically, but this doesn't work for static linking. Add the needed libraries explicitely to the feature probe and the Makefile. v2: Explicitly check for static linking and only add the dependencies when -static is set. This is to avoid regressions on Arnaldo's system.
