2007-09-21[PATCH] x86_64: Zero extend all registers after ptrace in 32bit entry path.Andi Kleen
Strictly it's only needed for eax. It actually does a little more than strictly needed -- the other registers are already zero extended. Also remove the now unnecessary and non functional compat task check in ptrace. 2007-08-30i386: fix lazy mode vmalloc synchronization for paravirtZachary Amsden
Found this looping Ubuntu installs with VMI. If unlucky enough to hit a vmalloc sync fault during a lazy mode operation (from an IRQ handler for a module which was not yet populated in current page directory, or from inside copy_one_pte, which touches swap_map, and hit in an unused 4M region), the required PDE update would never get flushed, causing an infinite page fault loop. This bug affects any paravirt-ops backend which uses lazy updates, I believe that makes it a bug in Xen, VMI and lguest. It only happens on LOWMEM kernels. Touching vmalloc memory in the middle of a lazy mode update can generate a kernel PDE update, which must be flushed immediately. The fix is to leave lazy mode when doing a vmalloc sync. 2007-08-30uml: fix previous request size limit fixJeff Dike
The previous patch which limited the number of sectors in a single request to a COWed device was correct in concept, but the limit was implemented in the wrong place. By putting it in ubd_add, it covered the cases where the COWing was specified on the command line. However, when the command line only has the COW file specified, the fact that it's a COW file isn't known until it's opened, so the limit is missed in these cases. This patch moves the sector limit from ubd_add to ubd_open_dev. 2007-08-22i386: Fix double fault handlerChuck Ebbert
The new percpu code has apparently broken the doublefault handler when CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK is set. Doublefault is handled by a hardware task, making the check SPIN_BUG_ON(lock->owner == current, lock, "recursion"); fault because it uses the FS register to access the percpu data for current, and that register is zero in the new TSS. (The trace I saw was on 2.6.20 where it was GS, but it looks like this will still happen with FS on 2.6.22.) Initializing FS in the doublefault_tss should fix it. Very old binutils (2.12.90...) seem to have trouble with newlines in assembler macro invocation. They put them into the resulting argument expansion. In this case this lead to a parse error because a .rept expression ended up spread over multiple lines. Change the PMDS() invocation to a single line. Revert 7e92b4fc345f5b6f57585fbe5ffdb0f24d7c9b26. It broke Sébastien Dugué's machine and Jeff said (persuasively) This seems like it will break decades-long-working stuff, in favor of breaking new ground in our favorite area, "trusting the BIOS." It's just not worth it for serial ports, IMO. Serial ports are something that just shouldn't break at this late stage in the game. My new Intel platform boxes don't even have serial ports, so I question the value of messing with serial port probing even more... because... just wait a year, and your box won't have a serial port either! :) I certainly don't object to the use of platform devices (or isa_driver), but the probe change seems questionable. That's sorta analagous to rewriting the floppy driver probe routine. Sure you could do it... but why risk all that damage and go through debugging all over again? It seems clear from this report that we cannot, should not, trust BIOS for something (a) so simple and (b) that has been working for over a decade. Much discussion ensued and we've decided to have another go at all of this. 2007-08-15powerpc: Fix size check for hugetlbfsBenjamin Herrenschmidt
My "slices" address space management code that was added in 2.6.22 implementation of get_unmapped_area() doesn't properly check that the size is a multiple of the requested page size. This allows userland to create VMAs that aren't a multiple of the huge page size with hugetlbfs (since hugetlbfs entirely relies on get_unmapped_area() to do that checking) which leads to a kernel BUG() when such areas are torn down. This reverts commit fd6e9d3945ee122eb513ada8b17296d243c1ce5e. Having #size-cells == 0 in a node indicates that things under the node aren't directly accessible, and therefore we shouldn't try to translate addresses for devices under the node into CPU physical addresses. Some drivers, such as the nvram driver for powermacs, rely on of_address_to_resource failing if they are called for a node representing a device whose resources aren't directly accessible by the CPU. [SPARC32]: Fix rounding errors in ndelay/udelay implementation. __ndelay and __udelay have not been delayung >= specified time. The problem with __ndelay has been tacked down to the rounding of the multiplier constant. By changing this, delays > app 18us are correctly calculated. The problem with __udelay has also been tracked down to rounding issues. Changing the multiplier constant (to match that used in sparc64) corrects for large delays and adding in a rounding constant corrects for trunctaion errors in the claculations. Many short delays will return without looping. This is not an error as there is the fixed delay of doing all the maths to calculate the loop count. 2007-07-06MTRR: Fix race causing set_mtrr to go into infinite loopLoic Prylli
Processors synchronization in set_mtrr requires the .gate field to be set after .count field is properly initialized. Without an explicit barrier, the compiler was reordering those memory stores. That was sometimes causing a processor (in ipi_handler) to see the .gate change and decrement .count before the latter is set by set_mtrr() (which then hangs in a infinite loop with irqs disabled). 2007-07-06i386: fix regression, endless loop in ptrace singlestep over an int80Jason Wessel
The commit 635cf99a80f4ebee59d70eb64bb85ce829e4591f introduced a regression. Executing a ptrace single step after certain int80 accesses will infinitely loop and never advance the PC. The TIF_SINGLESTEP check should be done on the return from the syscall and not before it. I loops on each single step on the pop right after the int80 which writes out to the console. At that point you can issue as many single steps as you want and it will not advance any further. 2007-07-06[MIPS] Fix scheduling latency issue on 24K, 34K and 74K coresRalf Baechle
The idle loop goes to sleep using the WAIT instruction if !need_resched(). This has is suffering from from a race condition that if if just after need_resched has returned 0 an interrupt might set TIF_NEED_RESCHED but we've just completed the test so go to sleep anyway. This would be trivial to fix by just disabling interrupts during that sequence as in: local_irq_disable(); if (!need_resched()) __asm__("wait"); local_irq_enable(); but the processor architecture leaves it undefined if a processor calling WAIT with interrupts disabled will ever restart its pipeline and indeed some processors have made use of the freedom provided by the architecture definition. This has been resolved and the Config7.WII bit indicates that the use of WAIT is safe on 24K, 24KE and 34K cores. 2007-07-04[ARM] Fix non-page aligned boot time mappingsRussell King
AT91SAM9260 stopped booting with the recent changes to MM initialisation - it was asking for a non-aligned virtual address which caused loops to be non-terminal. Fix this by rounding virtual addresses down, but remember to include the offset in the length, and round the length up to the following page. 2007-07-03Revert HPET resource reservationAndi Kleen
Matthias Lenk reports that the PCI subsystem would move the HPET on SB400/SB600-based systems, where the HPET is in BAR1 of the SMbus controller. The reason? The ACPI layer registered the PCI MMIO range as being busy too early, before PCI enumeration had happened, causing the PCI layer to decide that it should relocate the resources somewhere else. Firmware resources should be marked busy _after_ the PCI enumeration and probing has happened, not before. Remove the too-early reservation, we'll fix it up to do it properly later. In the meantime, this solves the regression. 2007-07-02[ARM] 4454/1: Use word accesses in Versatile PCI config readsAndrzej Zaborowski
ARM Versatile PCI config reads of one byte width have the lowest two bits of the address cleared and result in reading from a wrong place in the config space. This change is to use word size accesses like it is done for halfword reads. Byte reads are used for retrieving the IRQ number of a PCI device and the problem was not exposed until 2.6.20 because the value read was discarded in drivers/pci/setup-irq.c (recently fixed). The alternative would be to export the irq_map array instead, but it's an infrequently called function, and keeping the array unexported seems considerably cleaner. 2007-07-02[POWERPC] Fix PMI breakage in cbe_cbufreq driverChristian Krafft
The recent change to cell_defconfig to enable cpufreq on Cell exposed the fact that the cbe_cpufreq driver currently needs the PMI interface code to compile, but Kconfig doesn't make sure that the PMI interface code gets built if cbe_cpufreq is enabled. In fact cbe_cpufreq can work without PMI, so this ifdefs out the code that deals with PMI. This is a minimal solution for 2.6.22; a more comprehensive solution will be merged for 2.6.23. Commit 52ade9b3b97fd3bea42842a056fe0786c28d0555 changed the suspend code ordering to execute pm_ops->prepare() after the device model per-device .suspend() calls in order to fix some ACPI-related issues. Unfortunately, it broke the at91 platform which assumed that pm_ops->prepare() would be called before suspending devices. at91 used pm_ops->prepare() to get notified of the target system sleep state, so that it could use this information while suspending devices. However, with the current suspend code ordering pm_ops->prepare() is called too late for this purpose. Thus, at91 needs an additional method in 'struct pm_ops' that will be used for notifying the platform of the target system sleep state. Moreover, in the future such a method will also be needed by ACPI. This patch adds the .set_target() method to 'struct pm_ops' and makes the suspend code call it, if implemented, before executing the device model per-device .suspend() calls. It also modifies the at91 code to use pm_ops->set_target() instead of pm_ops->prepare(). Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-07-01i386: remove bogus mtrr range checkLinus Torvalds
Commit 9215da33209b861b01c51382254b178a3fe92a30 "fixed" the MTRR range check to not allow any MTRR's under the 1MB mark (since that's where the fixed MTRR's are active). However, that was totally bogus, since it's normal (and almost required) to have a large variable MTRR that starts at 0, and covers some large percentage of the whole RAM, and then using the fixed MTRR's to override that large MTRR to handle the special ISA hole in the 640k-1M region. The old check was bogus too (checking that no variable MTRR is used that is entirely under the 1MB range), but at least it wasn't actively detrimental, because no sane situation would ever trigger such MTRR usage in the first place. That said, the whole notion of not allowing variable MTRR's in the low 1MB is just stupid, so rather than revert the commit, this just removes the whole sad and unnecessary check entirely.
