2016-11-18i7300_idle: Remove this driverLen Brown
In preparation for removing the idle_notifier, remove its only user, the i7300_idle driver. i7300_idle was deployed in 2008 to reduce idle memory power on systems using the i7300 chipset. The driver worked by throttling the fully-buffered DIMMs during idle periods using the IOAT DMA engine. The driver ran only on the i7300 chip-set, and no other hardware has used this mechanism. The driver no longer has a maintainer. Removing this driver will increase idle power on i7300 systems when they run the new kernel without the driver. 2010-08-14intel_idle: disable module supportLen Brown
Right now the module capability is cauing more trouble than it is worth. At least one distro built intel_idle as a module where it lost the init race with ACPI, making it useless. Make intel_idle bool so that if you select it, you will use it. We can restore module capability after cpuidle is enhanced to handle run-time changing of idle drivers. This EXPERIMENTAL driver supersedes acpi_idle on Intel Atom Processors, Intel Core i3/i5/i7 Processors and associated Intel Xeon processors. It does not support the Intel Core2 processor or earlier. For kernels configured with ACPI, CONFIG_INTEL_IDLE=y allows intel_idle to probe before the ACPI processor driver. Booting with "intel_idle.max_cstate=0" disables intel_idle and the system will fall back on ACPI's "acpi_idle". Typical Linux distributions load ACPI processor module early, making CONFIG_INTEL_IDLE=m not easily useful on ACPI platforms. intel_idle probes all processors at module_init time. The Intel 7300 Memory Controller supports dynamic throttling of memory which can be used to save power when system is idle. This driver does the memory throttling when all CPUs are idle on such a system. Refer to "Intel 7300 Memory Controller Hub (MCH)" datasheet for the config space description.
