Introduce a struct v4l2_file_operations for v4l2 drivers. Remove the unnecessary inode argument. Move compat32 handling (and llseek) into the v4l2-dev core: this is now handled in the v4l2 core and no longer in the drivers themselves. Note that this changeset reverts an earlier patch that changed the return type of__video_ioctl2 from int to long. This change will be reinstated later in a much improved version. dev_set_name() This patch is part of a larger patch series which will remove the "char bus_id[20]" name string from struct device. The device name is managed in the kobject anyway, and without any size limitation, and just needlessly copied into "struct device". To set and read the device name dev_name(dev) and dev_set_name(dev) must be used. If your code uses static kobjects, which it shouldn't do, "const char *init_name" can be used to statically provide the name the registered device should have. At registration time, the init_name field is cleared, to enforce the use of dev_name(dev) to access the device name at a later time. We need to get rid of all occurrences of bus_id in the entire tree to be able to enable the new interface. Please apply this patch, and possibly convert any remaining remaining occurrences of bus_id. We want to submit a patch to -next, which will remove bus_id from "struct device", to find the remaining pieces to convert, and finally switch over to the new api, which will remove the 20 bytes array and does no longer have a size limitation. 2008-10-21V4L/DVB (9327): v4l: use video_device.num instead of minor in video%dHans Verkuil
The kernel number of a v4l2 node (e.g. videoX, radioX or vbiX) is now independent of the minor number. So instead of using the minor field of the video_device struct one has to use the num field: this always contains the kernel number of the device node. I forgot about this when I did the v4l2 core change, so this patch converts all drivers that use it in one go. Luckily the change is trivial. While doing some testing using Luca Risolia's sonix driver I noticed that the video device did not get ACL's set to allow access by locally logged in users, nor does it show up as a video device in lshal, causing cheese to not see it. This turns out to be caused by all of Luca Risolia's drivers not setting the parent member of the video_device struct. This patch fixes this. struct video_device used to define a .hardware field. While initialized on severl drivers, this field is never used inside V4L. However, drivers using it need to include the old V4L1 header. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. Because of historic reasons, there are two separate directories with V4L stuff. Most drivers are located at driver/media/video. However, some code for USB Webcams were inserted under drivers/usb/media. This makes difficult for module authors to know were things should be. Also, makes Kconfig menu confusing for normal users. This patch moves all V4L content under drivers/usb/media to drivers/media/video, and fixes Kconfig/Makefile entries.
